Ekk nets two in second half to push past Philly

CANTON – In an early morning contest on Day Two of the 2014 New England Pro-Am International Pre-Draft Showcase, Euro Hockey 1 pushed past the Philadelphia Little Flyers for a 5-4 win at the Canton Sportsplex.

All throughout both sides traded blows back and forth, with the Euros landing the first punch when Nick Hedemyr netted his third of the tournament at 7:54 of the first half. The Flyers drew even when Drew Gannon put away Philadelphia’s first goal of the game at 16:08, but Daniel Backstrom secured a 2-1 halftime lead for the Euros with his tally at 19:24 of the first.

Philly netted the first two goals coming out of the break with marks from Jaycob McCombs and Cullen McNally giving them a 3-2 advantage, the second coming on the power play at 10:15. The lead was lost as the Euros scored at the 15:00 mark to knot the game at 3-3, but then reclaimed but 20 seconds later as McCombs put away his second of the game, giving the Flyers a 4-3 lead.

The game was decided late when Viktor Ekk recorded his first two goals of the tournament, the second a shorthanded bid at 19:10, to put the Euros back on top for good and push the score to its 5-4 final.
