Townshend 99’s open with 2-1 win

Capitalize on late power play to take down Walpole.

WALPOLE – It was a mostly quiet, defensive affair as the Townshend Hockey Selects 99 and Walpole Express began their opening round play of the 2015 Junior Chowder Cup on Thursday morning at Rodman Arena. All the game’s offense came in a matter of minutes, resulting in a 2-1 Townshend win.

It was a scoreless first half for the two teams, and was also the case for much of the second half until both teams spiked to find the net late.

Townshend broke the scoreless tie by capitalizing on a 5-on-3 situation. Benjamin MacLennan putting away the game’s first goal at 18:16, a score assisted on by Devon Fields.

Still with the man-advantage, the Townshend power play struck again quickly to double their lead, Maxwell Cantor with the 5-on-4 tally at 19:30.

The quick strike offenses continued for a few more minutes as the Express cut their deficit in half just 45-second after Cantor’s goal, Jack Schwartz scoring at 20:15 to make it 2-1. Schwartz’s goal, however, marked the end of a 1:59 run that accounted for all the game’s offense, both sides clamping back down and Townshend holding the 2-1 advantage for the win.
