FOXBORO – One year ago, QJHA hoisted the College Open championship at the 2017 Sr. Chowder Cup. In 2018, they took to the Jr. A division, but fared no differently in the end. QJHA posted a 1-0 victory over CHE on Sunday afternoon at the Foxboro Sports Center to claim this year’s tournament’s top prize.
Unlike last year, however, when QJHA had an easier time in their College Open championship, which they won 4-0, the Jr. A trophy proved a bit more difficult to hoist.
Pace was high, hits were strong and the passing was concise, but the stoutness of the defense and goaltending was the marquee of the contest. Xavier Garneau for QJHA and Parker Swanson for CHE battling it out in their respective nets to claim the title.
The better chances and the better time of possession went to CHE, but everything that was tried by either side failed to convert. Even on special teams; a penalty shot for CHE and a power play for QJHA.
As the minutes ticked off the game clock, the game grew to have a sense that all it was going to take to win the prize was all of one goal. Overtime beginning before regulation had ended and with 2:37 remaining before the buzzer, QJHA forward William Lemay put away a feed from Cédrick Chagnon.
The kill shot did not deflate the CHE morale completely, but time was not on their side and the game ended 1-0. QJHA was crowned Jr. A division champion at New England Pro Am Hockey’s 2018 Sr. Chowder Cup.
