Whalers out race SLR

FOXBORO – It was something of an offensive affair on Saturday at the Foxboro Sports Center as the Jr A Boston Whalers closed out their opening round slate at the 2015 Chowder Cup with an 8-6 win over SLR.

The excitement began in the final three minutes of the first half when Connor Geshan broke a 1-1 tie at 22:03, giving the Whalers a 2-1 lead. It was the first of four combined goals scored by the two sides before the end of the half, which came to a close with Boston leading 4-2.

The offensive flurry continued at the onset of the second as Paul McAvoy and Phil Kreusser each scored for SLR in the first 1:30 to get the game back to even. Five times throughout the contest the two sides traded a pair of goals each, Boston going up by two, then SLR scoring two to tie it.

When Will Nearis scored a pair late in the second to put the Whalers up 8-6, however, there was not enough time left for another SLR rally, the second goal of the set coming at 24:42.

Nearis’ two goals were the final two of a total four for the Boston forward, leading all scorers. Teammate Taylor Davis had a game-high two assists, while Tyler Carangelo netted a pair to lead the SLR offense.
