FOXBORO – In a contest to decide the winner of their Jr. A Elite Division bracket, it was the Cape Cod Whalers coming out on top by virtue of a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Cavalry Saturday afternoon at the Foxboro Sports Center.
The Whalers took charge of the game early, controlling play and grabbing a 1-0 lead on a Charley Michalowski goal just 2:49 in. As the first half rolled along, however, the Cavalry began to gain steam, taking the game over. It took sometime, but they eventually broke through goaltender Elijah Harris and the Whalers defense at 21:14 as Matt Kashan netted his second of the tournament a 1-1 tie that lasted through the end of the half.
As they had done in the first, the Whalers struck quickly in the second half, Timothy Doherty scoring at 3:23 to reclaim the lead at 2-1. Cape Cod went up by two just over four minutes later on a goal by Kevin Hock, but the Cavalry continued to ride, Gavin O’Neil getting Minnesota back to within one shortly thereafter with a goal at 9:47.
The game stayed close until late when Boston College product Teddy Doherty netted his third of the tournament at 22:56, giving the Whalers some needed breathing round and bringing the score to its 4-2 final.
With the win, the Whalers remained perfect at 3-0, while the Cavalry dropped to 2-1 in the opening round. Both teams, however, advance to the preliminary round of Sunday’s playoffs.
