Townshend opens with big win

Home ice not so friendly for Walpole in 7-1 loss.

WALPOLE – The comforts of home ice were not all too pleasant for the Walpole Express on Thursday morning. The team opened their 2014 Junior Chowder Cup schedule with a 7-1 loss at the hands of Townshend Selects in ’98 Division play at Rodman Arena.

Townshend wasted no time getting to it, Taylor Kuchman scoring the first of two in the game at 1:24 of the opening half for the early 1-0 lead. The runaway continued throughout as Townshend built a 3-0 lead in the first eight minutes, goals coming from Dongyoon Shin and Mike Smith, and then upped it to 4-0 by intermission. Tyler Adamski’s goal at 20:14 accounting for the final one of the frame.

Unfortunately for the Express, it was much of the same in the second half. It took them a little longer to get the scoring going, but Gaston Adam’s goal at 7:50 kicked off a string of another three unanswered for Townshend, building the lead to 7-0 before the Express could stop the bleeding. Walpole’s lone goal in the contest coming from Sadie Bruno at 14:48 of the second, which also set the score at its 7-1 final.

Kuchman was the game’s only multipoint scorer with two goals. Jacob MacLennan backstopped the win for Townshend.
