RAYNHAM – Team Big Red closed out their opening round, College Open Division schedule of the 2014 Chowder Cup in the same fashion as they had the two games before it, with a win. This time it was the CD Rangers who fell victim to Big Red, dropping a 6-2 decision on Saturday morning at the Raynham IcePlex.
A four-goal first period highlighted the victory for Big Red. The team opened up a 4-0 advantage over their foes in the first 25:00, getting goals from Cole Maier, Michael Gilespie, JP Rafferty and Peter Straub. That lead grew to 6-0 early in the second, Gilespie with another at 1:57 and an Owen McGowan goal at 6:31, before the Rangers finally broke through.
Andrew Burke’s fourth of the tournament, coming on the power play at 15:06 of the second half, broke up the shutout and put the Rangers on the board, while Antonio Micucci continued the comeback with his goal at 17:33, making it 6-2. The rally, however, did not yield any more than the two goals.
