Storm thunders in offensive showdown

Start tournament with 7-4 victory over Westchester.

FOXBORO – It was a good start to the 2014 Mini Chowder Cup for the New England Storm, who began their opening round of play in the ’00 Division with a 7-4 victory over the Westchester Express on Friday afternoon at the Foxboro Sports Center.

The Storm got the best of their foe in the end, but it was Westchester that got things going first, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Colin Cobb and Trevor Ion at 4:57 and 6:10 of the first half, respectively. Things went from good to bad for the Express quickly, however, as a goal by Riley Brennan just 2:27 later got the Storm on the board and started a run of six unanswered over the remainder of the first and into the second half. A run that turned a decent Westchester lead into a wide deficit.

Harrison Roy, Thomas Kramer and Brendan Tully all scored in the rally, while Brennan completed his hat trick during that time.

Westchester started to spark a run if their own late in the second half, Stephan Miklakos coming through at 17:11 and Cobb again at 18:19 to bring the score to within two at 6-4. Their run came to an end just 1:01 later, however, as Matt Toner put the Storm back on the board, setting things at the 7-4 final.

Carl Stankowski was credited with 18 saves in the win for the Storm.
