Essentials take ’03 title, too.

FOXBORO – There have been four New England Pro-Am Hockey tournaments to date in 2017. Four times the Hockey Essentials program has hoisted a championship trophy.

The most recent of those four the 2003 division title at the 2017 Mini Chowder Cup as Hockey Essentials White defeated Team Quebec 4-3 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Foxboro Sports Center.

The two sides earned themselves a pair of victories en route to the tournament’s final tilt. Quebec first dispatched N’Ice Stix Prospects 6-3 in the quarters and then Pro Hockey West 4-3 in the semis. For Hockey Essentials, first it was a 3-1 victory over the Boston Jr. Blues and then an 8-1 route of Squires Gold.

While they found things pretty easy in the semis, Essentials knew going into the final match things would be much tighter. Though they ended up with the game’s first lead, it was a more than true sentiment.

Ed Ring put away the game’s first goal, coming at 5:17 for a 1-0 Hockey Essentials’ advantage. Neither side, however, was intent on letting their foe get all too far from their grasp.

Tristan Roy tied the game for Team Quebec at 15:58, but Essentials reclaimed their lead on a Liam Gilmartin score at 18:50. A two-goal swing for Team Quebec – Charles Boutin at 21:58 and Joshua Roy at 24:01 – gave them their first lead of the game. It was a 3-2 advantage that lasted until the trophy was within Team Quebec’s grasp.

With under a minute to play and some in the crowd packed up and ready to go home, Dylan Gratton found it fit to extend his team’s stay by a few more minutes. After assisting on Essentials’ first two goals of the game, Gratton took the spotlight and notched the 3-3 equalizer for Essentials with just 35-seconds remaining in regulation. It was the third of his game-high four points (2G, 2A) and forced the extra session.

In overtime, Gratton stayed right where he was on center stage. The Essentials’ defender notched the Mini Chowder Cup winning goal at 3:03 of the extra session, claiming the 2003 division title for Hockey Essentials.
