Canadian 73’s close with win

Generals still finishes atop the bracket.

WALPOLE – It was a bittersweet end to their journey through the 2014 Chowder Cup for the Canadian 73’s. They wrapped up their opening round play in the Jr. A Elite Division with a 2-0 win over the Boston Generals Jr. A on Saturday morning at Rodman Arena, but it was not enough to help them advance.

With both sides yielding just a handful of goals throughout the tournament, the scoring was at a premium in their third and final game of the opening round. Murphy Reid made his first of the tournament a game-winner, putting away a chance at 16:55 of the first half, giving the 73’s a 1-0 lead that lasted until the break. Alex Row’s third of the tournament just 1:34 into the second half gave the 73’s some breathing room on the scoreboard, but the Generals kept the score close throughout.

Jacob Tugnutt was credited with the shutout for the 73’s.

Despite the win and the shutout, the 73’s just miss out on winning the bracket and advancing to Sunday’s playoffs. With both teams tied at 2-1, the Generals move on by virtue of the first tiebreaker, least goals against (6 to 7).
