Boston Generals Prep Claim College Open Title

WALPOLE – There were two trophies to be handed out on Sunday as the 2016 Chowder Cup came to a close. The first of those went to Boston Generals Prep, who claimed the College Open championship with a 4-1 victory over SG Selects.

The journey to the finals started early Sunday morning for both squads, each posting three wins on their way to Rodman Arena in Walpole for the final contest late that afternoon. And with the Generals and SG giving up a combined two goals in those six games, it came as little surprise scoring was at a premium with the trophy on the line.

It was not until just past the game’s midpoint either team broke through their foe’s goaltending, Jay Luce netting his second of the day at 18:52 for a 1-0 Generals lead. Anthony Quinlivan then came through with his second of the day just 1:25 later to double Boston’s lead.

With 2:08 remaining, Connor Kucharski put the crowd on edge. After shutouts of NE Nordiques, Quebec Prospects and Dragons Selects en route to the final game, Kucharski’s goal was the first yielded by the Generals’ goaltending duo of Jon Scotto and Josh Pack on the tournament’s final day.

Their deficit down to one, there was plenty of time left for SG to rally and force overtime, but luck was not on their side. The Generals doubled their score with the opposing goaltender pulled, closing out the game with a 4-1 final.

Following the game, the College Open All-Tournament team was announced. With five goals in four days, the Generals Remy Parker highlighted the All-Tournament forward selections along with SG teammates Michael Helf and Kyle Podwicka.

Selects D-man and Hotchkiss product Connor Breen, stalwart throughout the day, highlighted the All-Tournament defensive line, paired with Prep’s Nick Vukota. Pack was tabbed as the All-Tournament squad’s goaltender.

Generals defenseman Justin Geary was named the College Open’s 2016 Most Valuable Player.
