Battle of Boston goes to Hockey Club over Whalers.

ATTLEBORO – It was Boston versus Boston on Saturday at the New England Sports Village as Boston Hockey Club took on the Boston Jr. Whalers in Jr. A Division play at the 2019 Sr. Chowder Cup. In the two sides’ final contest of the preliminary round, it was Boston Hockey Club finishing with the upper hand – and a perfect 3-0-0 record – following a 5-4 victory over the Whalers.

The first half of the game saw a period start and finish tied as both teams netted a pair of scores in those opening 25-minutes of play. Goals went back-and-forth between the two as shots were traded, Owen Stadheim with a pair for the Whalers, one each for Tyler Young and Sam Colangelo to keep Boston Hockey Club even on the score sheet.

Out of the break it was a hot start for Boston Hockey Club as Owen Fowler gave them a 3-2 lead less than a minute after the frame’s opening puck drop. Fowler then extended that advantage to 4-2 later in the second half, but a power play goal by Grant Sikich had the Whalers back within reach at 20:35.

Boston Hockey Club attempted to put the game away one more time on an unassisted score by David Sacco at 21:01, but the lead was never fully secured.

There was one final glimmer of hope as Chip Hamlett netted the Whalers’ second power play goal of the game at 22:35 to make it 5-4, but that was where the comeback rally ended. Goaltender and Union College commit Joe Sharib, and Hockey Club’s defense shut the door over the remaining few minutes to finally secure the victory.
